Steve Roberts is an attorney who practices in the rapidly developing area of homeland security law and regulation. Mr. Roberts writes and speaks frequently on the legal aspects of homeland security and counterterrorism affecting the nation’s critical infrastructure. His audiences have included government departments and agencies – such as the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Secret Service, Coast Guard, and the Federal Reserve – as well as academia and industry. His written work has appeared in newspapers, magazines, and law reviews.
Mr. Roberts’ work in homeland security and counterterrorism began in 1999. Since that time his professional experiences have included the United States Department of the Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, the Critical Infrastructure Assurance Office, and an assignment to the President’s Critical Infrastructure Protection Board formerly within the Executive Office of the President, the White House. Before starting his own firm, Mr. Roberts practiced law in the Washington, D.C. office of Alston & Bird LLP where he advised clients on homeland security legal and regulatory matters.
Mr. Roberts is currently a columnist for the National Law Journal and for Chemical Week where he writes on homeland security regulation, with a special emphasis on the Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS), rail transportation security, the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), and critical infrastructure-related public policy.
He is a regular guest instructor at the United States Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, Georgia. At FLETC, Mr. Roberts teaches in the Counterterrorism Division where he instructs on critical infrastructure protection, business continuity, and legal issues. He also teaches classes associated with critical infrastructure protection and homeland security legal issues at the U.S. Air Force Special Operations School, which is co-located with and directly supports the Joint Special Operations University at Hurlburt Field, Florida. Mr. Roberts has also been a Professorial Lecturer in Law at the George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C., and has joined the faculty at the University of Houston Law Center as an Adjunct Professor of Law to teach on homeland security law and policy.
Mr. Roberts is a member of the Florida Bar and the Bar of the District of Columbia and received his undergraduate degree, Cum Laude, from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University and his law degree, Magna Cum Laude and Order of the Coif, from the University of Florida. |
